Unique Legal Issues LGBTQ Families Face

The country has made great strides in the past five years with marriage equality and a few key employment cases in the courtroom. However, homophobia and discrimination still exist and continue to hurt both individuals and families in the LGBTQ community.

LGBTQ Community Resources

Since LGBTQ individuals are among some of our country’s most vulnerable, it’s crucial to provide them with LGBTQ-friendly resources that can empathize with their stories and understand their lifestyles and help them achieve a better, fairer quality of life. In Rachel Catt’s interview, she shared the following local options for support:

  • LGBT Bar Association - These legal professionals specialize in LGBTQ cases in an effort to promote justice and a better life for LGBTQ-aligned individuals. According to their website, the LGBT Bar Association is “a national association of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals, law students, activists, and affiliated lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender legal organizations.”

  • Human Rights Campaign - The HRC is a social justice organization committed to fighting for the rights of all marginalized groups, especially LGBTQ-aligned individuals. They provide resources and comprehensive programs to educate and empower the LGBTQ community to ensure that all members are treated as “full and equal citizens,” both in our own country and worldwide.

  • The Center – The Center on Colfax is a hub of resources, events, and programs for the LGBTQ community in Colorado. Their mission is clear, “To engage, empower, enrich, and advance the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer community of Colorado.”

  • National Center for Lesbian Rights - The National Center for Lesbian Rights or NCLR has advanced civil rights for the LGBTQ community since 1977. Their focus on human rights involves litigation, legislation, and education. This non-profit law firm also provides resources, programming, and even free legal assistance to LGBTQ individuals and families across the US.
